The amazing spring sunshine in Ibiza is warming our hearts and minds, and we can feel excitement mounting as new spring energies invite us to “get going”, to become outdoors-active, to spring-clean and to creatively arise!  With the evenings getting longer, we turn towards the light, and it feels more important to spend some time preparing ourselves for the Summer and to cultivate balance in body, heart and mind. 

So how are you going to balance this new energy infusion?  How would you like to have the tools to ride the waves of new creative impulses, both personally AND professionally?

Here is a quick 5 step “spring energy assessment” to focus your wishes, intentions and actions into a simple-fun-for-life strategy:. 

(1) List YOUR top 5 intentions – or goals – for this spring-summer season, ensuring they are positively stated and in the present tense as if you are experiencing them right now.

i.e: “I am writing a blog about healthy eating and the way that it has changed my life.”

(2) Now write down the ENERGY benefits of each of these intentions/goals; what will be the benefits for you, your life, your loved ones and your family when you are creating / achieving all of these?

i.e.: ”From writing this blog I am feeling fulfilled and focussed, purposeful and I feel I am offering the world something with meaning. It is giving me more to talk about with friends and family and I am deepening my interest in nutrition and sharing my passion for this with all those around me, which I can see is inspiring them too.”

(3) Re-read the list – and place the one at the top that will GIVE YOU the most energy, and that will keep your batteries charged.

 i.e.: “I am taking 30 minutes every morning to walk/jog and do wild yoga stretches in the park” “this is giving me clarity, focus and energises me for the day, whilst being in nature gives me a feeling of being grounded, calm and in control.  I am less reactive and feel relaxed and able to surmount the challenges of the day. I am more patient with my children and kinder to myself.”

(4) Give each of these a colour and allocate the amount of time per DAY / WEEK you can realistically give to this – whether thinking about it, feeling it or taking action on it.

i.e. “Monday – 30 mins morning walk / 30 mins evening Blog research & writing whilst children are having bed-time story with daddy”

(5) Now COLOUR your diary with the days/dates/times when you will be giving your time & energy to these intentions and goals.  This engages your subconscious mind to “block” these times for your purpose. Take a step back and double-check this

The secret is to reflect each Sunday, before the week ahead begins and to double check, as you plan your YOU-time diary for the week ahead, that everything feels realistic and compelling. It should not feel stressful or overwhelming – if it does – do less, and “be” more.  Notice any patterns of self-pressure and keep doing less until you are on track to keep doing what your body-mind-heart desires. Remember – all of this is supposed to be FUN!

JOY is the highest energy vibration which feeds itself sustainably – so check in with how you feel when planning and progressing this springtime.  Be happy!

This is one of the most popular salads we serve up regularly on our retreats. Mixed Salad with cashew & basil dressing, by the lovely Mayla at Conscious Food Ibiza. Simple to make, really tasty and satisfying too – clean eating at its best!

For the Salad

1 romano salad
1 bowl arugula
1 bowl baby spinach
1 handful of alfalfa
1 handful leek sprouts
1 handful fine chopped fresh dill
4 beetroots
1 small red onion super fine sliced
1 cup mixed seeds (sunflower, poppyseed, pumpkinseed)

The romano salad has to be chopped very fine and then you mix it in a big bowl with the spinach and the arugula. Cook the beetroots in whole peaces for 5 minutes. After you spiral them in the spiralizer ( if you don’t have a spiralizer rasp the beetroots) Then you can mix all the ingredients with the green leaves in the bowl.

On top you put the alfalfa and the seeds. If you have some edible flowers on top that would be lovely.

For the Dressing

1 cup cashews or 1 cup white tahini 2 cups olive oil
1 cup mineral water
1⁄4 cup agave syrup

1⁄2 cup lemon juice
2 teaspoons himalaya salt 1 handful fresh basil
1 clove garlic

Mix the cashews in the blender till it is a powder, than you ad all the other ingredients and blend it till it is creamy and smooth.Ready to Serve!

As the spring energies softly flow in, have you shaken off the last of the winter blues? Are you ready to embrace the energy of the new spring sunshine?

If you are still feeling lethargic, blocked, or in any way “not quite there” then maybe your lifestyle needs some purifying – a detox – to create fresh space in your body, your home, your life.

Our minds are constantly filtering information from our environmental surrounds.   This over-engages what we call the monkey mind and can create those “niggling” blockages and “up at night” insomnia moments, unless we have a regular, purifying internal / external clear-out.  Whatever the “stuff” is that is stuffed into that drawer, whichever emails have been sitting, gathering dust at the back of your inbox and yes – those relationships where there are still things “left unsaid” or, if YOU are needing to create inner-space, to give yourself extra focus and love, all of these components that make your life YOURS need regular attention to keep them clean, flowing and pure.

So here is a 5 step guide to clarify which parts of your life, into which you have been focussing YOUR time and energy (yep even subconsciously – this still plays a weight on your mind-body system), are creating a “pain in your neck” causing your to “carry extra weight” or have been “draining your energy”:   

(1) Fridge & Cupboards

How do you feel when you look at what you see? If you imagine eating what you are looking at, do you feel like it will BOOST or DRAIN your energy?  Anything UNDER 7-10 for energy boosting needs to go.  Your physical response is your inner-truth, it may come through as a quiet voice, physical feeling or a subtle “sense”.  And the more practice… the more your inner-wisdom can flow.

(2) Emails & Social Media

Digital detox time! Unsubscribe from anything other than what enables you to feel 7-10 GOOD to read.  News as we know it, is scripted to create “reactions” which over-stimulate the sympathetic nervous system (which is what turns our system on to fight-flight-or-freeze, mode and activates our adrenals and stimulates the production of cortisol). So if you want more clarity and calm in your life – at every level – start to set the 7-10 FILTERS, opt-OUT and unsubscribe.  Choose happy information instead!

(3) Yoga, Exercise, Outdoors-in-nature appointments

How can you up your serotonin levels most easily? Get breathing, get moving, create inner-space and focus on nourishing your “whole self”.  Get into the magical OUTDOORS as often as you can, make “nature dates” to immerse yourself in OXYGEN and to re-ionise through walking on earth rather than concrete.  Yes, even in cities, get to the parks to embalm yourself with calming colour green from trees, lawns and beautiful beds of flowers to help you feel more serene.

(4) Wardrobe & Home

How many pieces of exquisite design have you picked up at sales that “don’t quite fit” or just simply don’t feel 100% right?  Apply the 7/10 rule – beginning with your wardrobe to declutter clothes, shoes and accessories and then continue throughout your home interiors.  keepsakes, and knick-knacks all take up head-space, albeit it subconsciously to ensure that everything that you surround yourself with is doing its job, to help you feel GOOD energetically and emotionally.

(5) Social relationships

Are your friendships bringing you the warmth, love and support that feels good for you this year? If there are any that are NOT, then for BOTH of your wellbeing, isn’t it better to be clear?  Choose to spend time with those with whom you can be yourself and truly shine.  Then you can be sustainable radiators for each other and enhance each others’ state of body, soul and mind!

So is it time to choose to step up and spring-clean your lifestyle? It is all about “tuning in” and checking in with how you “feel” on a scale of 1 – 10. It really is that simple… and fun once you have begun!  You can also invite a friend to come and help you keep reality-checked and the more your practice, the more slick and super-fun your life-flow will become.

What do you think of when people talk about ‘comfort food?’

Is it a retro-type dish from your childhood, something like eggs, chips and beans, or a pile of buttery mash with sausages and gravy? Is it traditional fish and chips or a Sunday Roast? Or maybe something sweeter like sticky toffee pudding, or apple crumble and custard?

As people become ever more nutritionally aware and more in-tune with the benefits of healthy and balanced eating, then the concept of what constitutes ‘comfort food’ is also changing.

We’ve had a longer and harsher than usual Winter here in Ibiza, and cosy comfort food has been a hot topic of conversation! As more time has been spent curled up in front of fires, the desire for comfort food has been greater than ever, BUT – with the over-indulgent Christmas period a distant memory and Spring just around the corner, healthy eating is also back to the top of the agenda.

This gorgeous Vegan Balti recipe is a perfect example of healthy, hearty comfort eating, that will fuel your body, feed your soul and leave you feeling brimful of satisfaction.

With powerhouse spices, turmeric and cayenne pepper for added anti-oxidant goodness to help fight off Winter colds, and peppers, coriander, garam masala and cardamon for that authentic Balti flavour, this vegan curry hits all the right notes and is super-simple to make too!

Lisa Strong’s Vegan Balti

2 teaspoons coconut oil

½ tsp turmeric

¼ Tsp cinnamon

½ Tsp sweet paprika

½ Tsp cayenne pepper

1 can of chopped tomatoes

Half a lime juiced

1 ½ cups water

¼ tsp Palm sugar

Handful coriander

Red pepper, sliced thinly

Green pepper, sliced thinly

Pack of Tempeh (or Tofu)

¼ Tsp Garam masala

½ Tsp Coriander seeds (or powder)

Seeds from 2 cardamon pods

1 red onion, diced

1 inch ginger, grated

3 cloves garlic coarsely chopped

½ tsp salt

Heat 1 tsp oil over medium heat add peppers and cook for around 3-4 minutes, then remove & set aside. Add tempeh & garam masala to same pan cook for 3 -4 minutes and set aside.

Heat remaining oil add the seeds for 3 mins until fragrant then add onion, garlic, ginger & ¼ tsp salt. Cook until onion is translucent stir occasionally around 12 minutes. Then add turmeric, cinnamon, paprika, cayenne & tinned tomatoes. Cook until tomatoes are slightly saucy around 3-4 mins.

Combine the onion tomato mixture in blender with ½ cup of the water with the lime juice and blend until smooth. Add the sauce, remaining water, palm sugar & salt to the pan with the tempeh and peppers and simmer down for around 20 minutes. Garnish with Coriander…. Tastes even better the day after.

I serve mine with quinoa.

When you are amidst the challenges and responsibilities of daily life, how often to set aside “me time” to purely rest, be and dream?

Why is it that, so often, we put dreaming “last” on our to do lists?

As the medical world is beginning to recognise, due to all the functional illnesses presenting themselves, such as anxiety, insomnia and depression, these all have similar “symptoms” but no “root cause” that can be medically diagnosed.  Yet finally, modern medicine is beginning to hold hands with mental health professionals and yoga therapists who are collectively recognising that our over-active minds have been seriously stressing our holistic human systems.  From our schooling to parenting, to climbing the career ladder, we have been over-conditioned to “make things happen” and “get things done” – we have been programming ourselves to “succeed” materially, even if it pulls out of a positive life state, places pressure on our vital organs, sets our adrenals into overdrive.

 

We need to remember how to be like children more often… living from moment to moment, giving ourselves space to play, to have natural, stimulant free fun, which relaxes our whole system and creates the space for us to dream. Not only does this child-like space connect you to a higher-energetic frequency where you are feeling so good that you CAN you’re your mind and believe in new and better possibilities, this higher life state is one of infinite potential, connected to the third-eye and crown chakras, it also is the space of the “dreamer” within you who KNOWS that life can be colourful, magical and full of divine interventions.  It is in the dream-state that you are most open to the power of your heart’s intentions – to God or Spirit or Source guided INSPIRATION.

 

The value of dreaming (when you are awake!) is that it literally, opens your mind to allow your deeper desires and wishes to arise.  They may come as visions, inner-voices, or subtle senses of what you truly wish your life to be like.  And the caterpillar – chrysalis – butterfly metamorphosis demonstrates YOUR power to transform yourself and your life by dreaming:

 

The caterpillars new cells are called ‘imaginal cells.’ They resonate at a different frequency. They are so totally different from the caterpillar cells that his immune system thinks they are enemies…and gobbles them up–Chomp! Gulp! But these new imaginal cells continue to appear. More and more of them! Pretty soon, the caterpillar’s immune system cannot destroy them fast enough. More and more of the imaginal cells survive. And then an amazing thing happens! The little tiny lonely imaginal cells start to clump together, into friendly little groups. They all resonate together at the same frequency, passing information from one to another. Then, after awhile, another amazing thing happens! The clumps of imaginal cells start to cluster together!.., A long string of clumping and clustering imaginal cell, all resonating at the same frequency, all passing information from one to another there inside the chrysalis.”

 

“A wave of Good News travels throughout the system– Lurches and heaves…but not yet a butterfly.” Then at some point, the entire long string of imaginal cells suddenly realizes all together that it is Something Different from the caterpillar. This raw vegan chocolate mousse is simple to make, and BEYOND DELICIOUS!

AND it’s made from only good stuff, so you can treat yourself and feel good about yourself all at the same time. Isn’t that how you should always feel?

chocolate mousse

Raw Chocolate Mousse

1 cup water
1 cup coconut oil
60 gram cacao powder

1 avocado
half cup agave

Blend all together until it is smooth and creamy.

Put it in the fridge around 30 minutes.

Decorate the mousse with fruits, pistachio or coconut shreds.

‘New Year – New You’. How many times have we heard or seen that phrase? The idea that once the clock strikes midnight, we don’t actually turn into a pumpkin, yet we do suddenly leave behind all our ‘bad’ habits and become a new person overnight…

Statistics show that 75% of people break their resolutions just one week into them. So, how about a different approach? Now January is over and many of us might feel like we’ve failed already, let’s start again. You can make positive changes at any time and it’s even easier when the pressure is off! February is the new January.

So as I’m on my own retreat and taking time to reflect on the year past – practising gratitude for all that I’ve learnt and how I’ve grown – and the many blessings in my life, I’m still making that resolution to make big changes. And I’ve been in this business a long time now! I know that setting huge, unrealistic goals is like setting ourselves up for failure. So this time, I’ve changed the way that I look at my resolutions / promises to myself / life commitments at the turn of this year. And here are some top tips I’ve learnt along the way from my own experience and also from some of the incredibly wise souls that I’m lucky enough to meet on my path.

  • Make your Resolutions En-JOY-able.
  • Avoid negative language like “Stop doing X” or “Don’t do Y”. Make your resolutions something you can look forward to doing – make them more positively focused, with the emphasis on the outcome.
  • Sleep More!
    Research shows that as a population, most of us don’t get enough sleep. And sleep is so important for not only our appearance, but also the regeneration of our organs, our memory and also our nervous system. So allow yourself to lie-in when you need to and don’t feel guilty about taking a nap!
  • Travel More!
    There is nothing more inspiring that taking a life adventure. New places, people and experiences can help us to get out of any ‘ruts’ that we’ve been sitting in, in ‘comfortable discomfort’. Feel rejuvenated and replenished by saving for, planning and going on a trip – discovery and learning is great for the mind, body and spirit!
  • A daily practise!
    This is probably the most important piece of post-retreat advice we give. Take time daily to connect to yourself. We are so quick to get up, pick up our phones or switch on the TV and get out of the door, that we forget the most important thing – a daily connection to ourselves and our body, mind and spirit. Just taking the time in the morning to sit, breath and listen to yourself can change you whole day. If you feel under particular stress, then take the time to acknowledge what’s making you feel stressed, tap into your intuition and then set your intention for the day ahead. Often just imagining yourself fully protected and safe, before you go and give your energy away to the outside world, can be incredibly powerful. Even better if you have time to do a yoga practise!

  • Create a vision board!
    This is basically a great excuse to get a load of magazines, photos, words and colours that inspire you and to get the creative juices flowing. The Healing Power of Ibiza

Many of the people who have chosen to make Ibiza their home have a connection or history with the island. Many of us have danced our cares away across various dance floors on the island. However we came to be here, we all share one thing in common. A deep recognition of the healing power of this tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. But why is it so special? Ibiza has many magical and mystical spots, each said to have their own healing powers and spiritual qualities, and so many people are drawn to the island when seeking solace and comfort, or are looking to transform their life. Some of the most renowned healing spots are..

Es Vedra

The most famous and mystical point on our beautiful island, Es Vedra has a quiet, majestic aura all around it. According to ancient legend, it was the holy island of Tanit, who came to Ibiza as Phoenician goddess of fertility and heavenly mother and became Ibiza’s most revered goddess. The sight of this imposing rock towering 400m above the sea will stay in your heart forever. It is also said to be the third most magnetic point on Earth, which may explain its phenomenal spiritual attraction to the hundreds of visitors who flock to the shores of Cala D’hort each year to admire its power and beauty.

Tanit´s Caves

Tanit´s image can be found in many places across the island, from private pieces of art adorning the walls of hotels and villas, to ancient carvings to be discovered in mystical places such as Atlantis, Es Vedra and most of all, in the historical cave hidden deep into the rocks on the road to the beautiful bay of Cala San Vicente, where settlers created a temple for their Goddess Tanit many thousands of years ago.  A visit to Tanit´s cave is often a popular choice on our group retreats, with so many women feeling an almost inexplicable connection to the island and her femininity, and many beleive that visiting her can aid fertility problems. Atlantis

The area known as Atlantis is steeped in legend and mystery. Originally the ancient site was used as a quarry by the Phoenicians , and it is where most of the stone to build the Dalt Vila was sourced. Today you can still see many ancient sculptures and carvings of Buddha and the Goddess Tanit around the walls. Atlantis is difficult to find, as it is not signposted, but the natural formations of the rocks and surrounding scenery offer some of the best photographic opportunities anywhere on the island. Some boat charter companies offer trips by sea, or you can reach it from the road near to Sa Pedrera, but be warned it is a steep climb and not for the faint hearted. 1* Feel the fear and do it anyway… “The greatest thing to fear is fear itself”

Fears create a latent force Transform fears into a red-hot fire that empowers you to hone YOUR resources, you confidence, your courage and your inner-strength and self-esteem.  Fears create a pull on our energies that cause your energy to dull and heavier.  They can keep you “stuck” in that relationship, role or way of being that sustains an uncomfortable comfort zone.  Until that is, the discomfort becomes so great that you simply have to make that change.  So….. rather than pushing the fears away…

2* Shine your light 

If you have been ever awakened at night by surfacing fears and anxieties, you will know that, in the darkness, the worries feel bigger, the monster in your closet more terrifying and that, come morning light, a new awareness can arise.  Simply lighting a candle raising the vibration of the space you are in.  Just like shining a torch into the closet, where you can see that the monster is really a shadow of a hat or a new pair of stacked platform shoes, write a list of your worst fears…. go on, we gently dare you and in order to face them….

Managing your Autumn Energy – Ibiza Retreats style!

The transition between Autumn and Winter is a really good time to look at how your energy levels and your moods are connected. Many people find this transition difficult and if your energy is feeling low, then it’s natural that your mood will reflect this. We can take extra measures to ensure that we keep our selves in a happier and healthier place this winter.

Here are the top energy boosters – from the team here at Ibiza Retreats.

* Sleep
– Make time for more sleep – there is less sunlight to feed your vitamin D levels which activates the serotonin and cortisol in your brain, making it natural for your energy levels to drop. Your body may need more time to recharge.
– Rise early! Make the most of the daylight hours and try to wake naturally with the sunrise. This will help with the production of serotonin and cortisol. I find sleeping with my curtains a little open in winter helps.

– Keep your sleep routine consistent – this will regulate your circadian rhythms and improve the quality of your sleep

* Nourish
– Try to eat as seasonally as possible to work with mother nature. Things like sweet potatoes, root veg work really well and provide great slow release energy to keep you feeling warm and alert
– Try juicing – just like we get less sunlight hours, then the fruit and veg we eat does too – and often what we do get is less fresh, as it has to travel to us further from sunnier climes. Juicing is a great way to concentrate and maximise the amount of nutrients you are putting into yourself.

– Take supplements if you feel that your body needs an extra energy boost.

* Keep moving and get outside!
– Exercise will get those feel-good endorphins going – even if you feel lethargic and tired, resist the urge to slouch in front of a screen (whether it be a TV computer or phone!). Commit to a regular class or time to exercise daily / weekly and stick to it! It doesn’t have to be a high intensity class, but something which moves your body and focuses your mind. Try a few out to see what you enjoy.

– Take a walk! Even if it’s raining – put on a good rain coat and get out there! Fill your lungs with oxygen and energise your limbs. Take time to look at the beautiful colours and be really mindful as you walk. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel.

* Cuddles and kindness. 
– Hug more where you can! Your partner, friends, kids, pets – anyone or anything to feel the love.

– Be kind to yourself – don’t feel bad if your energy is low. A great friend once said to me “this too shall pass”. Surrendering to how you feel and making peace with it rather than self criticising is often the best way.

* Get some winter sun!

Nutritious Nourishing New Year Soup – Recipe of the Month

Last month we talked about Gratitude and how you could use that to get you through the busy festive season, and here you are… YOU made it WELL DONE!! However, now it’s all over many of you maybe feeling sluggish & rubbish. Some of you will have set your New Year intentions and could be looking towards transforming your life. So, we thought we would write a blog with a couple of tips which may help you on your journey.

Many people overinduldge in food & drink throughout December and are left feeling drained and undernourished. Yes I did say undernourished,  this may not be a word you would associate with Christmas as your belly is full and you’re struggling to fasten your pants,  however its often filled with the WRONG things so January is a great time to check in with yourself & recompose.

Before you pick up your recycle bags and rush to the supermarket to fill your fridge & cupboards with lots of healthy goodness… STOP!  Why not first start at home?

I invite you to begin by emptying your fridge, not simply to throw things away but so you can see exactly what is in there and the same with your cupboards. I know some mums and nans who start filling their Christmas cupboards at the beginning of December so lets find what is lurking in there and what can be done with it!!!!

Place anything remotely nutritious place to one side and anything you don’t think is good for your transformation to another. Now, decide who you would like to donate the Junk pile to… If you are in Ibiza I suggest Food for Ibiza or Moji’s for the animals. (Obviously no chocolate for the dogs!!)

Then, looking at the healthy pile, start to think what we can do. Soups, casseroles and pasta sauces are always a great way to use up veggies which aren’t looking their brightest and to get lots of nutritious goodness into you and the family. This is also a very affordable way to kick off the New Year as the purse strings may also have taken a strain. Yesterday I made a pumpkin & spinach pasta sauce with roasted pumpkin we had leftover from a curry we made a couple of nights ago. I blended the pumpkin with garlic, spinach & a bit of veggie stock then mixed it with Gluten Free brown rice pasta. This is a great way to get veggies into kids who don’t like them whole (like my son).

If there is fruit in the fruit bowl looking overripe & unappealing DON’T throw it away, instead use it to make delicious smoothies, juices, compote for Healthy Pancakes… Any bananas which are going black can be peeled, cut into chunks and frozen for banana nice cream, acai bowls or smoothies. The only thing ever in my freezer is frozen banana & acai;-)

If you have a cupboard full of unopened alcohol leftover and you can’t be trusted with it in the house think of a charity who maybe doing a raffle later in the year and gift to them for prizes…Or a friend who maybe throwing a big party later in the year,  they will thank you for it.

Below I have gifted a simple and easy recipe to kickstart your new year and give you the energy and nourishment your body and mind needs in order to Transform your Life. Enjoy!

Nutritious Nourishing New Year Soup

Chop one onion fry for few minutes then add 2 clove of garlic and red chilli with a teaspoon of turmeric.
Add 2 sticks of celery.
Pour 1.5L of Gluten Free Veggie stock in the pot.
Then add 2 chopped sweet potatoes and 1/3 cauliflower & 100g red lentils.
Cook for around 20 minutes (until sweet potatoes are soft).
Blend to your required consistency and add salt and pepper as required to taste.

NUTRITION TIPS : Cauliflower contains a wealth of anti inflammatory nutrients, Sweet potatoes have a numerous health benefits including Vitamin C, B6, Iron Vitamin D & Magneisum & red lentils which are a good source of fiber & protein while being low in calories.

Empower your personal practice – connect to your Vijnanamaya Kosha, the ultimate ‘Intuitive Radio frequency!

Do you every witness the ego-mind that raises doubts, fears and distractions even before you step onto your mat each morning?

This year, we invite and challenge to honour your Vijnanamaya Kosha to tune in each morning to your internal guidance system by invoking the divine discipline of a daily practice. We invite you to embrace YOUR power, on and OFF the yoga mat by living consciously.   We challenge you to invoke a deeper strength that can only come from a powerful inner-connection that enables you to embrace the challenges, the changes and the magical opportunities that arise.

Many conversations around Christmas dinner tables have been of the changes arising in our societies.   Does this word “change” excite you or frighten you? Yoga and Meditation automatically invite MORE change! And change is always happening.  Every moment of every day, in every cell of our bodies and in every ripple into the world around us that these changes create. Many of our personal pains, discomforts and most dis-ease comes from resisting our innate need to change at some subconscious level, emotionally, spiritually or physically.  When you come into conflict with the changes that need to arise, you may feel stressed, doubtful, physically blocked or even experience bigger, more painful mirrors that bring all of life into question, accidents or force majeures which come like bolts from the blue to call all of life into question.

So how can you, beginning this year, enter a new phase of allowing “the new” to break through and arise?

It all begins with a personal practice that enables you to stay tuned in to your innate wisdom, your Vijnanamaya Kosha, the “sheath” of your being that represents your innate consciousness, which is connected to divine source energy that connects each and every one of us to each other and to all that is.  Your connection to your Vijnanamaya Kosha is in essence, your connection to the radio-wave frequency of how to stay aligned with the greater universal consciousness of all that is – of Brahma, Spirit or God, the essence of all creation.

And all of this can be reached, according to 3,000 years of yogic and meditative traditions, by developing a personal practice that empowers you to consciously honour your life-path, in 10 simple steps:

(1) Purchase a gorgeous, indulgent scented candle that makes you think and feel your sweetest essence!
(2) Place the candle in a place where you can lay your mat in front of – and experience a sense of peace in your home
(3) Prepare your space the night before, add cushions, bolsters or blankets so that it is cosy and inviting
(4) Set a gentle, beautiful sounding reminder so that you can awaken before others in your home

(5) Set a clock for 5 – 10 minutes timing – and then get comfortable, sitting, semi-supine, or lying, bring your hands to your belly and breathe.
(6) Lengthen your breaths, focussing on deepening the exhales and inviting all negativity, confusion and toxins to release.
(7) Invite space and light with the inhales to open your body, heart and mind.
Breath in this way 20 x conscious times.
(8) NOW: Ask yourself – where in my body do I feel my inner guidance system is?  From which part of your body do I make the choices that i feel are innately right for me? (and therefore for the greater good of my WHOLE self, my family, my friends, the world around me?”
(9) Bring your hands to this part – and feel in to what colour it is, what shape and form it is.  Is it moving or is it still? Is it warm or is it cool? Is it making any sound?
(10) Ask your inner-guidance system: if your plans for the day ahead really ARE honouring your mental, physical and spiritual needs? Are you feeling any innate resistance? Be mindful of any messages which resonate tension or a sense of shallower-breathing. Visualise your day ahead in a smooth and joyful flow.  Now commit to say YES to the choices that you can make that will honour the needs of your body, mind and soul.

From here you can continue with further pranayama, or asana sequences… to open your energy pathways, to stretch, open and strengthen your beautiful body.

Boost your momentum: Dedicate your Practice – to Syria, to the courage of refugees and compassion for others in need…

The Mindful art of Gratitude

Give yourself the gift of gratitude this Christmas time…. and enjoy the magic that this spreads to the world around you, as you reconnect to your inner-sense of peace and plenty, joy and happiness.

At this sparkling, busy, time of year, whatever your background, spiritual orientation or religion, do you feel pulled in many directions, to give more and more time and energy? The pressure can truly build and the suggestions that we should be perfectly happy can seep into the subconscious, whether it’s from photos the images social media, all of external life can seem to suggest that you can create the perfect lunch, outfit, manage to purchase that “sold out” present for the right person and lift the spirits of all those around you.

So amidst the whirling intensity and end-of-year escalations, how can you beat a retreat from the heat and reconnect to your inner-peace?

It all begins with counting your blessings consciously, so give yourself the gift of practicing Gratitude with this simple mindful practice.

As Dr Noelle’s Nelson’s wonderful book, The Power of your Appreciation demonstrates, appreciation is a dynamic energy force that can enable you to change your life state in the present moment (and into the future) for the better.  And it can be a simple mindful practice – where you focus on one thing, right now, that you can be truly grateful for about that situation, thing or person. You can literally appreciate your way UP the good-vibrational-state tree!

It could be that you are grateful for your, that you have a warm home, that you live in a place of relative peace, or that you have a loving partner, mother or friend.

Maybe something as simple as: “ I am grateful that my legs are strong and working for me to carry me through to Christmas and beyond!”

Now give full attention to your legs and focus on a minimum of 5 things to be grateful for:

1 – FEEL and appreciate how strong they are

2 – SENSE and appreciate the way your feet can connect fully to the earth

3 – EXPLORE and appreciate the way they can lift your whole upper body to the floor:

4 – FEEL and appreciate the muscles engaging as you roll from the heels of your feet to your toes

5 – BREATHE into your appreciate and notice anything else about your legs

And as you do this reflect on how your mind state shifts, how your breathing changes…. how your muscles feel in your body?  You will feel  your life force, your prana, flowing more freely, deeply and easily and bubbling over, just like magic, to all of those around you.  Feel your life state expanding as your positive energy rises.

Whatever you appreciate will appreciate in size and energetic vibration.  So why not, this Christmas, keep a gratitude journal. Gratitude is more than an attitude, it has an energetic resonance that opens your heart chakra and enables your mind to find acceptance also for more challenging people and situations.

So for a healthy, happy Christmas spread the peace and love by focussing your mind powerfully on everything YOU can appreciate.

The festive period can be really stressful for many reasons… spending time with family members where all that old stuff comes back again. Over-indulgence – in all senses of the word – emotions as well as food and alcohol. Here is Ibiza Retreats top 5 tips from morning to bedtime to help you stay calm, grounded and healthy over this festive period.

*1* Breath! 

Start your day by connecting to your breath. This works really well with a meditation. Alternate nostril breathing is a really simple and effective way to calm your breath. And when your breathing is calm, you feel calm and more likely to be able to handle any situation you’re presented with.

Technique: Coming to a comfortable seated position, rest left hand on lap. Begin by covering left nostril with middle finger of right hand. Take a slow, deep inhale, then release finger and cover right nostril with right thumb as you exhale through the left. Continue for three to five minutes. Add an oil of your choice dabbed on to your pressure points for an extra sensory relaxation – try rose or lavender as Ibiza Retreats all time faves.

*2* Get your digestion ready! 
Agni Sara is an all-time classic way to get in touch with your digestion and internal organs and jiggle things around a bit! Consider it like an internal massage to be practised before you eat to prep your digestive system.
Technique: Stand with your feet a little more than hip-width apart with your knees bent, and place your hands on your thighs. Bring the weight of your torso over your arms (avoid bending your elbows) so that you can start with a relaxed belly. Look down toward your belly.

For the basic variation “abdominal squeeze”, simply contract and release your belly with your breath, drawing your navel back toward your spine on the exhale, and relaxing your belly on the inhale. Start with about five to ten repetitions.

*3* For ‘that’ moment
Warrior 2 is possibly the most empowering yoga pose ever. Stand tall, stand strong, and settle into your pose.
Technique: Try closing your eyes. Feel the muscles in the body working to hold you steady as you connect to the absolute power that resides within. Use your breath, ground down to the earth and just take a moment for you!
 
*4* Get your Legs up the wall 
An all time favourite and the perfect way to end a stressful / over-indulgent day! It allows all the blood to rush away from the feet back to the heart clearing all the old ‘stuff’ out. It also calms the nervous system very nicely too.

Technique: Curl yourself into a ball on your side and get your sitting bones as close as you can do to the wall. We like to place a comfy blanket or cushion under your sacrum here for extra support. Bring your knees into your chest and give yourself a gentle hug there before extending your legs up the wall. Bring one hand onto your belly and the other onto your heart, breathing into both of these places in your natural rhythm. Stay here for around 10 minutes or until you feel your feet really beginning to tingle. Come out by reversing how you came in!

*5* The morning after the night before
If you wake up feeling a little sluggish or stressed, the good old child’s pose is a bit of a catch all!
Technique: A classic child’s pose where you bring your big toes together and either your thighs wider or closer (depending on what feels better) and rest your forehead on the floor (or a cushion or clock if that’s more accessible to you) can bring a feeling of instant calm as you feel your troubles melt away…

If your stress is coming from the fact that you feel really sluggish, then try bringing your fists into balls against your lower belly. Lengthen your spine and soften your belly with every exhale for a gentle internal self-massage.

Our tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean loves to celebrate Christmas! It may not be as commercial as in other countries and you certainly won’t see a Christmas tree before December 1, but there is plenty to do and see to get into the Christmas spirit! Carols and Canapes  – Atzaro – Thursday 8th December

Hosted by island residents Ivor Campbell-Davis and Lindsay Jay, this is the third year in which they will kick off the festive season with a truly idyllic evening of, as the name suggests, Christmas carols and canapés, plus perhaps cheeky glass of champagne, all under the twinkling lights of the Atzaro Christmas tree. Last year saw more attendees than ever join together, both adults and children alike to join in the singing, catch up with friends or indeed, make new ones, and generally spread some Christmas love around.. There is a suggested donation of 5€ per person, which goes directly to Mojis Animal Sanctuary, a cause close to our heart, so dig out your song sheets and join the choir!

Walking Ibiza – Special Christmas walk –  The Lost City

Since 2010, Toby Clarke, an islander born and bred, with his intrepid team of walking guides and loyal walkers have been exploring every pathway, cliffside and nook and cranny of our beloved island. And this Christmas, Toby himself will be hosting a very special guided walk, taking you on an adventure of myths and mystery with a festive theme.. Beginning in the picturesque village of San Mateu and ending at ‘The Lost City’, a legendary place where the Moors when they ruled the kingdom, were said to have built and lived in a town holding over  1000 people.  The walk will meander through the beautiful valleys of the North passing through many of the islands richest vineyards, then heading deep into the forest, enjoying the heady scent and welcome shade of the pines, passing olive, fig and carob trees, and foraging for herbs along the way.

You will also be privileged to marvel at the ‘Great Wall of Ibiza’, which stretches across the headland. When built, it reached a height of 5m, with lookout towers to guard the island from marauding pirates, yet today, only the remains of this great wall exist as a reminder of days gone by, however, from this vantage point you can enjoy unforgettable views across the water, even as far as mainland Spain on clear Ibizan day. The walk will come to a celebratory end at the idyllic setting of Can Cires in San Mateu where you can reward your hard walking efforts with a hearty Christmas lunch.

Love from Ibiza does Winter Wonderland at Lamuella

The Ibiza based charity who dedicate so much time and effort to the current refugee crisis in Syria, Love from Ibiza will be hosting their epic Winter Wonderland charity event in the beautiful settings of Lamuella on Saturday 3rd December. This is a truly worthwhile cause, and one to think about when we are tempted to overindulge this festive season. So, why not take the opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves, at this magical event which is full of activities and events, with a special performance from the local performing arts academy´s children´s choir. Shop for handmade, beautifully crafted gifts for your loved ones at the colourful and eclectic Christmas market, and little ones can visit Santa in his grotto, with all proceeds going to support this wonderful charity.

Managing your Autumn Energy – Ibiza Retreats style!

The transition between Autumn and Winter is a really good time to look at how your energy levels and your moods are connected. Many people find this transition difficult and if your energy is feeling low, then it’s natural that your mood will reflect this. We can take extra measures to ensure that we keep our selves in a happier and healthier place this winter.

Here are the top energy boosters – from the team here at Ibiza Retreats.

* Sleep
– Make time for more sleep – there is less sunlight to feed your vitamin D levels which activates the serotonin and cortisol in your brain, making it natural for your energy levels to drop. Your body may need more time to recharge.
– Rise early! Make the most of the daylight hours and try to wake naturally with the sunrise. This will help with the production of serotonin and cortisol. I find sleeping with my curtains a little open in winter helps.

– Keep your sleep routine consistent – this will regulate your circadian rhythms and improve the quality of your sleep

* Nourish
– Try to eat as seasonally as possible to work with mother nature. Things like sweet potatoes, root veg work really well and provide great slow release energy to keep you feeling warm and alert
– Try juicing – just like we get less sunlight hours, then the fruit and veg we eat does too – and often what we do get is less fresh, as it has to travel to us further from sunnier climes. Juicing is a great way to concentrate and maximise the amount of nutrients you are putting into yourself.

– Take supplements if you feel that your body needs an extra energy boost.

* Keep moving and get outside!
– Exercise will get those feel-good endorphins going – even if you feel lethargic and tired, resist the urge to slouch in front of a screen (whether it be a TV computer or phone!). Commit to a regular class or time to exercise daily / weekly and stick to it! It doesn’t have to be a high intensity class, but something which moves your body and focuses your mind. Try a few out to see what you enjoy.

– Take a walk! Even if it’s raining – put on a good rain coat and get out there! Fill your lungs with oxygen and energise your limbs. Take time to look at the beautiful colours and be really mindful as you walk. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel.

* Cuddles and kindness. 
– Hug more where you can! Your partner, friends, kids, pets – anyone or anything to feel the love.

– Be kind to yourself – don’t feel bad if your energy is low. A great friend once said to me “this too shall pass”. Surrendering to how you feel and making peace with it rather than self criticising is often the best way.

* Get some winter sun! 

– Do you have the opportunity to take some time out for yourself to recharge the batteries? Here in Ibiza, we benefit from over 300 days of sunshine a year, so if you’re feeling sluggish and low, come and get some gentle vitamin D

Breathing is the new meditation

Not all of us have a  meditation practise and in fact, the idea of sitting still and trying to focus and quieten down the monkey mind can be incredibly daunting. You may be familiar with Ujjayi breath from your Ashtanga or vinyasa yoga classes – where we present this (sometimes  Darth Vader style) breath as the ‘victorious breath’ (ji = to conquer and ud = bondage) to focus and train the mind during our asana practise.

In fact, the practise of Ujjayi breath can be a wonderful alternative, said to have many benefits:
* Soothes and calms the nervous system
* Cultivates mindfulness
* Slows down the heart-rate
* Helps you let go of the past by encouraging you to be present

* Improves the respiratory and circulatory systems

Here’s how…

Ujjayi is all about what’s happening in the throat. While it can be practiced in many different positions, we’ll go through the steps while sitting in a traditional meditation posture.

1. Sit comfortably in any seated pose, utilising any cushions or props you might need to be comfortable for a while sitting – often comfort is the key to the practise! Lift the crown of your head toward the sky to lengthen the spine and bring the chin parallel to the floor. Close your eyes.

2. Rest the palms on your knees or bring your thumb and index finger together into a mudra – this creates a circuit that directs prana (life force energy) toward the brain.

3. Take three natural breaths through the nose. Fill the belly with each inhalation and feel the belly draw naturally toward the spine with each exhalation.

4. Gently contract the back of the throat (the glottis) and inhale slowly through the nose. This creates a soft sound of the sea in the throat. Keeping the throat contracted, exhale slowly through the nose. Each breath should be long, deep, and practiced with awareness. When first learning Ujjayi, the breath is usually quite audible. With practice, it becomes so subtle that it’s only audible to the practitioner themselves.

5. Practice Ujjayi for 3-5 minutes, concentrating on the sound of the breath.

6. End on an exhalation and return to natural breathing.

There are no restrictions or contra-indications to ujjayi breath – so you can practise any time of day – even after food. Build your breath practise and feel the benefits! Enjoy! x

Ibiza Retreats’ love affair with the stunning spa-hotel Atzaro has been long-lasting.  We have had the pleasure of teaching there, of helping to organise Healing Ibiza and of offering retreats too.  It is a truly magical escape, full of orange trees and organic gardens, Balinese flourishes and real-Ibiza soul.

Change of season, change of habits!

The changing of the season can bring with it coughs, colds and that general ‘low’ feeling as the summer nights draw in. Staying healthy and vital during this transition can be easy if you follow some of our hints and tips to help you create healthy new habits.

* The attitude of gratitude!  if you are seeing dark clouds from your bedroom window each morning, rather than rays of sunlight through the clouds! Try a gratitude practice! Remind yourself each morning of 5 things you are grateful for in your life. For example, your health, supportive friends, a loving partner or financial security. If this practice is really difficult, then start simpler – I am grateful for every breath I take.
* Nurture yourself with warming foods and drinks. Try ginger, lemon and honey with fresh tumeric (an incredible natural anti-inflammatory) for an immune system boost!
Or create delicious soups and stews with seasonal veg. Check out what is in season now in your local farmers market – nature gives us plenty of clues on what’s good for us at what time of year.
* A daily practice! It’s amazing how having some kind of personal practice can enhance your life experience. This is what anchors you during all of life’s ups and downs. Whether this practice is (just for some examples) yoga, mindfulness, journaling, meditation. Find what works for you – everybody has a different story and a different way to connect to themselves.
* Have an autumn (rather than spring!) life clean! Consider this a mini life detox by removing anything which isn’t serving you right now. This can include organizing your winter wardrobe, researching recipes and healthy winter food options, having a look at the relationships close to you in your life. And how about reviewing your new year resolutions – and setting yourself an achievable goal to help you realise them. Don’t be hard on yourself! It’s now time to reassess and create positive new attitudes.

Tanit – The Warrior Goddess of Fertility, Dance & Creation

Ibiza is an island steeped in myths, magic and legends, and perhaps none so prevalent as the ancient tale of the Goddess Tanit, who, for centuries has been celebrated as the Goddess of Ibiza, a warrior woman who represents fertility, dance & creation of life. Also known as a guardian of womankind and all things feminine, her presence is felt by many women who travel here to seek solace, soothe troubled souls and find peace and guidance on this magical island, whom so many before them have done.

Tanit´s image can be found in many places across the island, from private pieces of art adorning the walls of hotels and villas, to ancient carvings to be discovered in mystical places such as Atlantis, Es Vedra and most of all, in the historical cave hidden deep into the rocks on the road to the beautiful bay of Cala San Vicente, where settlers created a temple for their Goddess Tanit many thousands of years ago.

This spectacular cave, to be found nestled high above the picturesque village, is some 150 metres high and was discovered in 1907, by the Archaeological Society of Ibiza, who unearthed over 600 carvings, stautues and other commemorations to this empowering Goddess. The official name of the cave is the Cova d’es Cuieram, and legend has it that this sacred space has been inhabited since many thousands of years ago, when much of the island’s tiny population worshipped the goddess Tanit as their deity.

  •     Rosemary – Growing all over the island, this beautifully scented herb tones organs and purifies your system.  A natural awakener, it has been proven to enhance your memory and to clarify your mind.  Best enjoyed with fresh lemon from our trees and a cheeky dollop of locally farmed honey.
  • Turmeric – contains a yellow active compound called curcumin. It’s curative qualities are many and include:being an anti-inflammatory agent, helping to heal the gut, can be used to treat menstrual cramps and supports the growth of good bacteria (known as probiotics) so perfect for boosting your digestive health and is great for improving your immune system.  We also love a spoonful of the powder in raw honey for sore throats and to pre-empt the onset of colds, enhanced with black pepper.
  • Hierba Luisa – also known as Lemon Verbana, calms and tones the nervous system, enhances your immune system and its’ fragrance alone uplifts the senses and helps you feel the sun shine from the inside.

September Secrets

As soon as the last day of August ends, it feels like the whole island takes a huge exhale. A sigh of relief as the crowds subside for another season. September is a month of golden sun, warm glittering seas, spectacular sunsets and a sense of spaciousness. It’s the perfect time to discover the real Ibiza…away from the clubs, bars and restaurants – just you, nature and the elements! Here’s a few of our September favourites:

* Go on a hike! There are many ways you can do this – whether you prefer to discover the island nomad style with just your compass and a map in hand… or go on a group guided walk with Ibiza Walking Association or Walking Ibiza. Our friend Rob Smith has written 2 wonderful books with many many routes in both the North and South of the island (including a handy barcode where you can download the route to your phone via an app). Or you can check out the Ibiza Tourist board website – and look for those blue arrows! Our favourites include: Portinatx lighthouse, Portixol and of course, the mythical Es Vedra.

* Sant Joan market on a Sunday morning is fully alive in September, as the heat begins to subside and it becomes a much more pleasant experience! Go wander – taste, listen, dance and get to meet (or just people watch) some of the island’s more quirky and colourful characters.

* Catch a sunset! Es Vedra, Cala D’hort, Moon Beach in the North, Cala Conte, Cap des Falco (you can also grab a cocktail here at Experiemental Beach Club) or even Sant Antonio’s sunset strip for atmosphere and more people watching, to name just a few special spots. There is something quite special about the sunset later in the season. The colours are deeper, more golden and the experience even more magical!

* Al fresco dining! As the evenings become cooler, dining al fresco in one of Ibiza’s many island restaurants becomes a must! Try La Paloma, Es Caliu, Can Bass, Can Domingo, Can Beri Vell just a few of our favourite spots for you to try for yourselves!

We’ve had to be incredibly organised this year (due to the sheer demand from our guests) for our 2017 dates and calendar of retreats! We’ve usually begun to wind down a little for winter before we finalise this – and we languish over it lazily with a juice in hand around November time. But as Ibiza Retreats grows and changes; our team expands and the number of retreats that we run increases again, we’ve had to step it up for 2017! And it’s with absolute pleasure that we do so. We’re so proud of what we offer our guests – transformational experiences that really change lives.

Casa Lakshmi – Meet the team – Marrejan

Every great creation is the sum of its’ parts and the Mandala of energies and colourful spirits that make Casa Lakshmi Luz flow and whirr with grace and ease are a dream team for Susie and I (Larah) to work with.

When we began the Lakshmi journey, we realised that we needed a “house mama” – someone, with great knowledge of Ibiza, who shared our vision of creating a home-from-home of abundance, light and love.  We needed someone who knew that the retreats were also part of their life mission and, above all, who cared for the wellbeing of Casa Lakshmi Luz and her guests as much as we do.

And Marrejan, who had been a former yogi of ours, is now a yoga teacher herself and a Hakomi therapist, offered her time, love and energy for this role. We saw that she was naturally devoted to wellness in her own life and was able to see the light and potential in others, even in their darkest times.  And as her time with us has proved (and her ongoing communications with post-retreat clients show) she is deeply committed to enabling all others to discover their personal paths of health and happiness, at their own pace, in the way that is most nourishing and empowering for them.

Marrejan’s expansive life journey has seen her spend 40 years in Ibiza as well as sailing, with her (then) young son, around Africa, running a restaurant in Brazil and many other occupations and service-focused roles that ensure that she sees her clients’ needs fully and is able to meet them.

She also can see the needs of Casa Lakshmi! And helps Susie and I, along with our wonderful team of house-keepers and gardeners and expert carpenter-artisans, to maintain pool, gardens and furniture and furnishings to a super high standard, as well as managing the Ibiza quirks of delicate water systems and electrical appliances and the ever-unknowns of a gorgeous old finca like Lakshmi who has her own life-energy and soul!

On hand for everything from guiding you to our hidden location to offering expert advice about the best beaches and coves for sunsets and sunrise (she has swum, snorkelled and sailed quite literally, all around the island, she also gives wonderful hugs! Enabling many to exhale and feel safe to let go.  And, like all great storytellers, she can offer healing metaphors from her own life, inspiring you to learn the vital lessons that will enhance your own.

Gentle and understated, she speaks 5 languages and offers gentle, precise guidance for new yogis on the deck or those recovering from operations or illness.  She says that she often has to “pinch herself” because the work, from welcoming external teachers and group leaders to Lakshmi, to morning silent walks, co-teaching beach yoga or being the listening ear when a tea and empathy is most needed, for her this “really is living my dream”.

We love how Marrejan enables all who walk through Casa Lakshmi Luz’s doors to feel authentically and genuinely welcome – we hope you get to meet her very soon!

Tunein Peace Out – World Peace Day 2016

On September 21st  all around the world, from New York to Mumbai to the green fields of England, a peaceful initiative begins to encourage human-beings (yep – that is you and me) to create more peace inside themselves, to create the more peaceful societies that we all seek.

At Ibiza Retreats we will be honouring this world wide connection of peaceful warriors with morning guided meditation and mantras during our Pure Yoga & Revitalisation Retreat. You are WELCOME from 9am to come and join us OR to tune in virtually!

And whether you can find a peaceful gathering at your local yoga centre, Buddhist centre or meditation space, or prefer to explore the peace within can also be found alone… wherever you are in the world on September 21st, here are our Top 5 ways to radiate peace outwards to our beautiful world – which begins, by tuning in.

  1. Meditate – find a peaceful space, ensure you are sitting comfortably with your spine upright, so your breathing can flow optimally and your body can remain relaxed.  Use cushions or even a chair if you need.  Begin to focus on your inhales and exhales, the sounds and sensations of your breathing.  Focus on slowing down your breathing, counting the breath in and the breath out, continue to focus purely on your breathing and let any thoughts pass through your minds’ eye like clouds in the sky.
  1.   1. Mentally tune OUT – of all devices, screens and mind-stimulants.  Choose to just look at emails and other notifications at certain times of the day for a limited amount of time.
  1. Make time to spend time in Mother nature – where the energy, spaciousness and abundance of life are healing, nourishing, grounding (which gets you OUT of your head) and proven to calm body and mind.
  1. Move your body gently – Our Western cultures spend far too much time “in the head” which raises blood-pressure, over-stimulates adrenals and causes excess anxiety.  With yoga (creating union of body, mind and spirit for inner and outer peace), or walking or swimming, focus on gentle breath-aligned movements (rather than going for cardio-vascular training) to bring your body, mind and spirit into connection so that you can hear your inner-voice, that intuitive guidance system that tells you what you need, day to day, to live in peace and harmony.

Like a pebble dropped into a pond, as your vibrational state changes, your mind calms and your heart opens, the qualities of the cells in your body changes, enabling your health and happiness to increase which radiates out to all those that you meet, from virtual emails to bus drivers and those on the street.

Top 3 Desk Stretches

Simple and yet strong, these 3 Desk Stretches are wonderful yogic tools to stay physically open and emotionally centred when back from retreat, in daily life.
Our current laptop culture is wreaking havoc on our pectorals! Yes, those little muscles that open our chest outwards, can also collapse your chest cavity and draw your shoulders inwards.  When this happens your breathing  shortens and sits higher in your chest, which also stimulates feelings of tension as the neck muscles start to compensate and shorter breaths = stress!
There is a tendency to collapse into chairs constricting the diaphragm and lung cavity which prevents prana, vital life force energy, from fully entering.  Not only does this deplete you energetically, this also impacts your moods, prana = positivity! Therefore taking regular “breath for life” breaks can empower and enhance your day in many ways.
So to open chest, heart, lungs and mind, here are 3 top stretches to expand and unwind and enjoy this breath-led body-mind reset!
(1) Gomukhasana
“Cow-face pose” is an asymmetrical stretch that is powerful and challenging.  Practice “ahimsa” and move gently into this, using a tie or scarf to bind the posture by connecting your hands until they naturally meet.
– exhale down and ground through your feet,  inhale up through your crown to the sky, feel your spine lengthening
–  inhale your left arm up to the sky
– exhale your left hand down towards your spine
– inhale your right arm up to sky
– exhale your right hand down and rotate your elbow to turn your hand up to find your left
– enjoy 5 long, deep breaths, smooth and firm
– on inhales breathe into your diaphragm and front of spine, grow the crown of your head to the sky, relax your chin
– on exhales draw your head back towards your hands and your navel to your spine to exhale out through your back
– Change sides
(2) Garudasana
“Eagle pose” is the perfect counter posture to Gomukhasna, inviting you to breath into the back of your body, focussing on the thoracic spine.
– inhale your arms open wide at 90 degrees, like a “T”
– exhale your right arm under your left
– draw your palms together (as much as you can)
– on inhales breathe into the back of your diaphragm and lift your elbows gently
– on exhales draw your navel upwards and backwards, feel your spine grow out of your pelvis, lengthening and strengthening
– enjoy 5 long, deep, breaths, smooth and firm
release at the end of the final exhale
– Enjoy 5 – 10 slow, smooth breath-led arm circles, rising your arms up and drawing them back on the inhale, exhaling your arms down by your side
Change sides
(3) Reverse Namaste
Another chest and heart opener which invites full diaphragmatic breathing.
– Inhale your arms up above your head, lengthen from your feet, through your sit-bones to the sky
– Exhale your arms behind your back and gently draw your palms together
If you are not yet able to to do this – hold your opposite elbows until your flexibility increases
– Enjoy 5 long, deep, breaths, smooth and firm 
– on inhales breath fully into the front, back and sides of your ribs, feeling your diaphragm expanding like a hot air balloon
– on exhales, soften your shoulders and draw navel to spine to connect with your core, feel your spine growing up out of your pelvis
– enjoy 5 long, deep, breaths, smooth and firm
– release at the end of the final exhale and extend your arms out in a wide “T”
– Enjoy 5 – 10 slow, smooth breath-led arm circles, rising your arms up and drawing them back on the inhale, exhaling your arms down by your side

Simple yet profound.  The magic of yoga, whether on retreat with us here in Ibiza, or in bite-size desk-slices, is to practice every day.  So why not set a tinkling timer every 45 mins – 1 hour for a breath-for-life break that will enhance your health and happiness in many ways?

Our favourite late summer spots for yoga, meditation and swimming

As the seasons change our bodies also change, moving with the seasons in order to create balance within us. Having a daily practice can serve as the grounding force or anchor to help us flow smoothly in times of transition or change. Here are some tips you can incorporate into your practice as we ease into autumn in Ibiza.

* Start and end your practice with an awareness of your foundation, paying particular attention to your feet – including the subtleties and details of the toes – and imagining them fully grounded into the earth.

* Make your practice nurturing – flowing through poses with a sense of lightness and incorporating restorative postures in your practice can really help this. Invest in a block and place it under your sacrum towards the end of every practice in supported bridge pose.

* Incorporate balance poses into every practice to build your sense of grounding and increase you physical (and so spiritual!) balance.

* Meditate! End your practice with a seated meditation before you come into savasana. Focus on your breath and visualise yourself as balanced and grounded.

The practice of yoga shifts and moves energy. It also increases blood flow to our organs and cells, creating physical benefits such an increased immune system and a stronger body, in addition to being mentally focusing and grounding. If you begin to see your practice as a part of your daily routine – just like brushing your teeth or taking a shower – then you can begin to look forward to your practice because you know exactly how good you feel afterwards!

Restore, Rebalance, Revitalise – Yoga, Fitness and Eat-clean Retreat

This retreat is all about the bigger picture. And as much as we love love love yoga, we felt the need for a little bit of cardio and that lovely rush of endorphins, ways to strengthen the body and some education on what eating healthily is really all about. Not fanatical, but practical ways to build all these delicious elements into your life.

We had a trial run of this new concept of retreat in July, with glowing testimonials. This retreat is for you if you are looking for a practical, grounded approach to living your life. If you want to find balance, but don’t really know where to start. And if you want to enjoy all this within a spiritual and conscious framework.

Lisa Strong is our nutrition guru – full of incredible, practical advice delivered with such passion and enthusiasm, that you feel so inspired to try for yourself. Susie Howell heads up the yoga flow – and the integration of strength training has come from her own experience. Feeling the difference and depth in her own practise and how to avoid injuries! We are joined by plenty of other amazing teachers and therapists – each who will add their own little bit of magic to the retreat.
